Golconda Fort Hyderabad
Golconda Fort is undoubtedly one of the most attractive features of the Hyderabad city. Built by Kakatiya Kings in the 13th century, Golconda Fort captivates its visitors with imposing figure and architectural excellence. However, the current structure of the fort is made up of granite walls with eight gates and 87 bastions by the Qutub Shahi Kings.
Spread across an area of 7 kms, Golconda Fort makes for an amazing sight. It has huge gates which are decorated with pointed iron spikes. The fort is covered with curtain walls so as to protect the fort from Elephants from damaging the fort and also from enemy attacks.
Apart from its architectural excellence, the fort also present its visitors with highly advanced technology used during its creation. For instance, the system if acoustics here is worth noticing. The sound of hands clapped at the entry gate can be heard quite clearly at the ‘Bala Hissar’ which is the highest point and almost a kilometer away. Along with this, one will also be pleasantly surprised with the unique telephonic system across two walls. It an fun filled activity to try this yourself. You can go to the corner of one wall and wisher, person standing at the corner of the other wall will be able to hear you very clearly.
Another interesting feature of the Fort is the Ramdas’ prison. As per the legend, Ramadas was a revenue collector in Abdul Hasan Shah’s court who was later imprisoned. During his imprisonment, he carved Hindu deities on the wall of his cell.
The Golconda Fort used to have a diamond market as well. This market was quite popular and used to have merchants from all over the world. It is said that the famous Kohinoor and Hope diamonds along with others such as The Regent Diamond, Darya-e Nur, Nur-Ul-Ain Diamond were stored at Golconda Fort.
What makes a trip to Golconda Fort all the more exciting is the sound and laser show. The sound and light show is done with a voiceover of Bollywood living legend Amitabh Bachchan presenting the fort in an altogether different and enchanting way.
